Canyon has had a wrestling team for many years and continues to improve. This year’s coaches are coach Ron Baker and coach Danica Carpenter. I had the pleasure of interviewing Coach Carpenter, Devin Quantz, and Su Nae Burden.
Coach Carpenter has been one of the coaches for eight years now. She shared that something different about this year’s team is how the athletes got to club(similar to scrimmages in other sports) and the summer camps. How they show their willingness and participation shows their love for the sport. Some goals that were set for the team this year were learning how to get their moves in, going to state, and overall growth in the sport.
Senior Su Nea Burden has been on the wrestling team for four years now and is this year’s captain. Something she loves about wrestling is the girls on her team. When asked about a piece of advice her coaches have given her that has stuck with her she said, “You don’t stop when you’re tired; you stop when you’re done.”
Senior Devin Quantz has been on the team for four years now. When asked what about wrestling he loved, he said, “I love the grind. It’s just physically and mentally challenging.” One piece of advice his coaches gave him that stuck with him is “you don’t go to practice, you get to go to practice.
