The holiday season in New Braunfels is officially underway, and this year’s festivities are better than ever. The city’s annual tree lighting and the new Gruene Ice Skating Rink have kicked off the holiday spirit.
For the first time, New Braunfels is home to an ice skating rink, located in the heart of Gruene just behind The Pomegranate, near H.D. Gruene Jr.’s Private Office. The rink is set to be open daily from November 24 to January 5, 2025. It will be open from Monday to Thursday from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m., and Friday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
“I found out about the rink because some of my friends went, so I decided to check it out. I went with my family, and we loved it,” said Senior Lauren Deleon.
Ice skates are available for rent starting at $18, and the rink is adorned with holiday lights and decorations, adding to the winter wonderland ambiance. Free parking is available throughout Gruene Historic District. The festive activity has enticed several Canyon High School students.
“The set-up was adorable! My parents and I have always loved the charm of Gruene around the holidays, but the rink made it extra special this year,” said Senior Danyella Carrelli.
Just around the corner from the rink, the annual downtown tree lighting ceremony took place on Friday, November 22, 2024, drawing hundreds of residents and visitors to the heart of New Braunfels. The event kicked off with Mayor Neal Linnartz addressing the crowd at 6:30 p.. and then he began the countdown, and the tree was lit.
“I have gone to the tree lighting ever since I can remember, and every year my family and I look forward to it. I feel like the Christmas season does not start until then,” said Junior Mckinley Hell.
Santa Claus arrived on a New Braunfels Fire Department fire truck and made his way to the NBU parking lot, where families will have a chance to have their photo taken with him. The Canyon High School Steel Drum Band provided entertainment until 8:30 p.m.
“Being able to perform for people in our community is such a cool experience. My favorite part is playing in front of little kids,” said Sophomore Ford Bechtol.
Between the Gruene ice skating rink and the annual tree lighting, New Braunfels is embracing the holiday spirit in full force this year. Both events highlight the city’s dedication to bringing families together and celebrating the season.
