The Canyon Cougar Lacrosse team is having an amazing 2023-2024 season. 

Native Americans created the sport but Europeans created the rules for the game many years later. It has slowly evolved and become more popular. It is now one of the fastest sports played on foot and is one of the fastest-growing sports in America.

Lacrosse is played with ten players on the field per team. Lacrosse players use sticks with a small net at the top to carry the ball down the field and score. The sport is similar to soccer because they have to cast the ball into a goal to score points. 

Both the girls and boys have amazing records and have had some exciting games. Right now the boys’ team is undefeated and the girls’ team is 5-2 as of Saturday, March 23, 2024.

Coach Gallagher said, “The biggest highlight on the girls’ side was scoring with zero seconds left on the clock to force overtime. On the flip side, the boys scored with only ten seconds left to win a game. So we’ve had a lot of really fun and close games this season.” Gallagher stated that he prefers having close games rather than winning by a lot because it makes the game much more entertaining.

Gallagher has coached the lacrosse team at Canyon for eight years. He said, “I think that over the eight years, both teams have come so far and I think these two teams are the best we’ve ever had and it has been really fun.”
