The Canyon High School Powerlifting team wrapped up its 2025 season last week; it was certainly one for the books. Records were broken and challenges were met, and now at the end of the season, a retrospective is certainly in order to remember the story of this year’s Canyon Powerlifting Team.
Many members of the team were able to crush their previous personal records near the conclusion of the season: McKenzie Isbill and Sydney Banks were both able to set personal records of 295 pounds on their deadlift, for example. It is no surprise that with the intensive combined efforts of powerlifting head coaches Mark and Kara Steele, the only ceiling that existed was the sky.
This powerlifting team was also no slouch when it came to results in their competitions. Team members were racking up strong results across the board that propelled the team to success. Gabriel Benitez achieved a 610 pound squat at the Texas High School Powerlifting State Meet and previously mentioned McKenzie Isbill was able to sit at third place in the state within the 148 unequipped weight class. Another teammate, Sala Nuu, was able to secure third place statewide for Division 6A following a 375 pound deadlift effort.
Success is no new mark in the history of this team. We at Cougar Tracks wrote an article last year about the powerlifting team, and the content of that article shows the exact continuous progress stressed by both Coach Steeles. Before-mentioned Sydney Banks was highly touted last year by Mark Steele, which there is now no surprise why given her current track record on the year.
With medals being taken home and previous thresholds left surpassed, it is certain that the 2025 Canyon High School Powerlifting Team was one that will not be forgotten anytime soon.
