Canyon High School hosted one of our most successful, engaging celebrations of S.P.U.D this March. Teachers, students and clubs around the school came together to aid the common good across the Comal community with activities and fundraisers alike, drawing strong crowds and eager participants. Cougar Tracks had the pleasure of interviewing multiple of those involved in the S.P.U.D month activities.
Theatre teacher Carter Ridge played a great role in these activities. Her efforts, along with the rest of her club, were able to generate $1470 from S.P.U.D Movie Day in the PAC during a showing of The Little Mermaid. Upon being asked what made S.P.U.D month so important to acknowledge, Ridge noted, “It is important to celebrate S.P.U.D so we can help families in our community and show how Cougar Nation supports and lifts up one another.”
Ridge also remarked, “As a mom of a little one who has been in and out of the hospital a lot, being able to celebrate these warriors is a blessing not only in what we raise in money, but
what we raise in their spirits.”
By lending out a helping hand, Cougar Nation can alleviate much of the stress these families endure while providing them with the funds they need to take action, all while upholding the Cougar way!
The American Sign Language (ASL) club participated in S.P.U.D this year with their Signing for Sodas. They first started Signing for Sodas four years ago not only to help the cause but to also bring deaf awareness. Mrs. Sanchez’s favorite part of having the ASL Club participate is the community it brings together. The total amount they raised was $575. “It’s such a good feeling when you’re helping others,” said Mrs.Sanchez.
Mrs. Avery-Gibson is the advisor for the Student Council. Student Council is the organization that puts S.P.U.D. together. Not only do they organize it, but they also have events
they do themselves including Teacher for a Day, Canyon’s Got Talent, Faculty vs. Student Basketball Game, and t-shirt sales. Mrs. Avery-Gibson’s favorite part of S.P.U.D. is seeing her students rally and work together to help the cause.
The end total Canyon High School raised was $12,562.54 for Hadley Krifka, a second grader at Oak Creek Elementary, and her family. Hadley has had a long journey with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. It was an honor to have Cougar Nation come together to help a young one in our local community. S.P.U.D. has been a big part of our school’s traditions for years now and will continue to be celebrated for many years to come.
