Many fine arts, clubs and extracurricular activities are very fun and important for students here at Canyon High School, but when it comes to balancing school work and clubs, that is where we see students starting to be challenged. Toward the 6th week mark before eligibility check, I was able to interview students in band and theater about how they handle their classes.
Many band students have shared that keeping up with work while having practice after school has been challenging. Sophomore, Kora Garcia said, “I don’t get lots of sleep because I do my work at night,” after being asked how she balanced school work with marching band.
Another band student and senior Tristiana Medrano quoted, “I make sure I do all my work before and after practice.”
While there’s other fine arts and clubs that have rehearsal after school I was able to get in touch with a student in Theater. Sophomore Giada Garza said, “I did not give myself enough time to do other things., specifically sleep. I realized this summer going into sophomore year that I had to make a change. I decided to have a “bedtime” but for school work. This action alone has improved my time management and productivity to get work done at school by leaving it to future me to deal with the work load done at home.”
Sports is also a big challenge when it comes to balancing school work. Freshman basketball player Kieren White said, “I do my work in class or usually finish after school.”
As I observed in classes and Coog Time, I saw students focusing on school work from other classes while doing their assigned work in their class, and 60% of these students were involved in a fine art or sport. Time management for many people can be stressful sometimes, but everyone has a specific reason for pushing themselves, and that is what they do.
Canyons clubs, sports and fine arts all provide a chance for each student to express and do what they love. Many kids push through all the work just to show that they love what they do and it is a good thing here at Canyon.
Make sure to stay on top of your assignments and always remember that you are smart! Have a good weekend, Coogs!
