It is that time of the year again! The halls of Canyon High School are booming and buzzing with excitement for the upcoming school year! The crowded hallways consist of returning and new faces. Many of these students have already adjusted to their schedules and are immersed in extracurriculars. As we shift from the stress-free summer to the structured fall, how is our student body and staff adapting? We gathered some insight into the current mindset of an educator and fellow student.
English teacher and Student Council sponsor Mrs. Avary stated, “This year has been good so far! I love my students, and it’s fun because some of them I taught as freshmen, so I get to have them in class again.” While sharing this full-circle moment she also emphasized her passion for encouraging students to reach their potential.
Mrs. Avary has been at Canyon for eight years and continues to ensure students flourish, stating, “I love my job. I love the relationships I get to build and keep with my students, even after they graduate…While the job certainly has difficult parts, I love everything I do because I get to help make things happen for my students.”
“The goals I have this year for myself and my students are the same every year: to ensure that they know that I am their biggest advocate, to make sure they know that they are loved, and to give them a space to come to where they feel safe and welcome,” expressed Mrs. Avary.
I had the privilege of hearing from a peer who is balancing the responsibilities attached to her various positions at Canyon. “My overall experience as a student here has been great. I am involved in so much that I have built a community here…I am Student Council President and Senior Class Vice President. I am a part of the National Honor Society, Key Club, Varsity Orchestra, JV Girls Golf, and I am a Student Section Leader,” commented Senior Anna Benson.
When asked how she is adapting to the school year, Anna Benson expressed that senioritis is rapidly kicking in. “I have seven class periods this year and I am not too happy about that,” stated Senior Anna Benson.
Senior Anna Benson shared her goals for the year, “I would like to be more on time for school, maintain a 95 or above in all my classes and move up in rank three places to be in the top 15 people [of the senior class].”
It is apparent that both students and teachers are enthusiastic about the 2024-2025 school year. As excitement fills the air, the Canyon halls are full of abundant potential among students and educators prepared to support student success.
