Calvin the Cougar has been Canyon High School’s mascot since the first graduating class in 1960. The mascot changes yearly and remains a mystery until the end of each year when they are revealed.
A mascot’s job is to keep the crowd cheering and smiling. Calvin the Cougar says that to be a mascot they, “Yell with my body, try to be really excited, dance, be funny, and interact with the crowd.” They said their favorite part of being a mascot is, “Definitely taking pictures with people and making them smile.”
Cheer coach Ms. Ranke said, “We have a tryout process that happens the same time the cheerleaders try out. In order to try out the potential mascots have to do a 2-minute skit in front of judges.”
Calvin also stated, “The original mascot quit, and after a couple of weeks, I became Calvin.” The mascot works alongside the cheerleaders to learn the cheers and some of the moves to pump up the crowd.
Coach Ranke stated, “They usually go to all the big events.” Calvin mentioned so far they’ve gone to all the football games, pep rallies, fundraisers, and even pep rallies for the Comal ISD elementary schools.
The history of Canyon High School’s mascot hasn’t changed since the 60s. Canyon High School has always had a Cougar as their mascot and they have always been named Calvin. However, Coach Ranke mentioned that the suit has changed a few times. Calvin has left a legacy for Canyon students and the New Braunfels community for decades and hopefully will continue for decades to come.
