The holiday season is a time for giving. The students at Canyon High School are leading by example. The high school’s clubs came together to host Cougar Christmas, an event that brings joy and festive cheer to elementary students in need.
On December 17, about 970 members of various clubs and sports, gathered to give wrapped and prepared gifts to 105 elementary students from Clear Springs, Freiheit, Goodwin Frazier, Morningside and Oak Creek.
“I love giving back to my community and this is the perfect way to do that,” said senior Cassidy Henderson. “Seeing how happy and grateful the kids are makes the event so special.”
With the help of the campus’ Communities in School South Central Texas (CIS) site coordinators, each student organization at CHS adopts a student or two from the list of children who have been identified with needs during the holiday season. The gifts, which were purchased using funds raised by the clubs and sports teams, included essential items such as clothing, toys, and books.
“I have participated in this event for both basketball and student council and have helped in buying and wrapping gifts,” said senior Roman McFall. “It is a special experience that I look forward to every year.”
The gifts were received by the elementary students and then they enjoyed a slice of pizza. The event was met with smiles and moments of joy from both the recipients and the high school students who made it all possible.
“My favorite part is the moment when we first give the kids gifts and you can see their faces light up with excitement,” said senior Cassidy Henderson. “I also love when they are done opening gifts and get to open a few and play with them.”
As the holiday season continues, high school students are reminded that the true spirit of giving is about making a difference in the lives of others. Cougar Christmas is a shining example of this spirit, and it will undoubtedly continue to inspire kindness and generosity in the years to come.
