As the heartbeat of our school community, the Canyon Student Council plays a crucial role in fostering a sense of belonging and ensuring that the interests of the study body coincide with school events. Composed of officers from each grade, the council is dedicated to enhancing the student experience and promoting a positive school environment.
Senior Anna Benson is leading this year’s STUCO officer team. Anna is also Senior Class Vice President and a part of National Honor Society, Key Club, Varsity Orchestra, JV Girls Golf and a Student Section Leader.
“I have been involved in STUCO since sixth grade, however I have been an officer here at Canyon for four years now,” said senior Anna Benson.
The Student Council meets weekly to organize, plan and execute various school-wide events that cater to the interests and needs of the student body. This year, the council is composed of the following committees: Environment & Energy (E&E), Community Service, Staff Appreciation, Drugs, Alcohol, Safety, and Health (DASH), and Pride & Patriotism (P&P.)
“A lot of prep and planning goes into the events, we have officer meetings every Tuesday before school and member meetings every Wednesday after school,” said senior Anna Benson. “It takes more effort than people realize.”
One of the council’s most well-known events this semester is the Homecoming spirit week and the dance. From selecting the theme to setting up decorations, STUCO does it all. This traditional event is a chance for students to come together, celebrate school spirit, and create lasting memories.
“This month I am most excited for homecoming and as for the rest of the year SPUD is always a fun event,” said senior and STUCO Vice President Parker Beringer.
STUCO encourages all students to get involved, whether by attending meetings, participating in events, or simply sharing ideas with representatives. “The best way to just get involved is to just show up at a member meeting,” said senior Anna Benson. “These are held on Wednesdays after school. We do not require dues, simply show up and participate.”
In closing, the Student Council is more than just a group of elected students; it is a dynamic force that empowers every member of our school community. With their dedication to service and advocacy, they are truly shaping the future of our school.
