Assistant Principal Mrs. Mitchell is a new addition here at Canyon High School this school year. Mrs. Mitchell was raised here in Texas and graduated from Church Hill High School. After graduation she attended San Antonio Community College in hopes of becoming a nurse but when the first wave of people were chosen and she was not one, she then attended the formerly known as Southwest Texas (now Texas State) University. She found her love for education.
After graduating with a teaching certification in first through eighth grade, she was hired to teach pre-k through third grade at a Christian private school in the Northeast Independent School District. She then moved to the San Antonio Independent School District and taught fifth grade before moving up to middle school, teaching sixth through eighth grade. Eventually, she decided to become a reading specialist and trained for dyslexia.
“The majority of students I saw really struggling were struggling with a specific learning disability in reading, but reading impacts every subject including math so I thought if I became a certified experts that will really help me,”said Mrs. Mitchell
After some time she was notified of a school that was opening at Canyon Lake,Trinity Charter School, also an equestrian school with various animals. When she looked into it, she learned that it is a school for girls rescued from trafficking, abuse, and neglect. She joined their school and was there for ten years. While there, she taught fourth through twelfth grade, got certified for special education kindergarten through twelfth grade and English as a second language, and became an administrator. She also helped create the 16 other schools that Trinity Charter School has. Lastly, she moved down the coast to help set up the first Trinity School in the coastal region and was there for two years.
“It was such an incredible opportunity,” stated Mrs. Michell
From here, she moved to Rockport Fulton High School and was an assistant principal and ran their DAEP (district alternative education placement) program. Her last stop was London ISD as an assistant principal. Now she is rocking the cougar red here at Canyon.
“I like to be a lifelong learner, and my degree truly allowed me… my specialty just allowed me to kind of chameleon and to morph into whatever the need was”
It was a great pleasure to get to know and write about Mrs. Mitchell and the journey that brought her here to Canyon High School. We here at Canyon are so lucky to have such an amazing person join Cougar Nation.
