The Canyon High School wrestling season has resulted in many memories and victories with all the matches that they have competed in this year. Both boys and girls teams have done very well, and the last week of January is a big week for the wrestling team, as it is the varsity district tournament. The season has been successful even through struggles and challenges the wrestlers shared.
Sophomore Mackenzie Loper quoted, “The biggest challenge was having to cut weight. I didn’t have to cut a lot, but it was definitely hard to do.” Weight has also been a challenge for
Sophomore Mira Johnson, who stated, “The biggest challenge for me was making weight.”
With challenges, there are also ways to overcome them by setting goals and improving. Coaches are available for their wrestlers to help them with these challenges. Each coach has a different way to help the students.
Coach Spivey stated, “I like to help the students by encouraging them and allowing them to learn from their mistakes that they have made.”
Throughout the season, the wrestlers have faced challenges both mentally and physically, from confidence, physical demand or even staying on top of their grades. Most of the athletes were able to push through and make improvements.
Sophomore Mira Johnson said, “I have improved myself since the beginning of the season by working on my mentality and having more faith in myself.”
This wrestling season has been more than just wrestling because it provided an opportunity for self-improvement. Student wrestlers have also learned habits and skills that help each of them improve as individuals. The changes that each wrestler went through will forever make a positive impact on them and help get them ready for the next season.
The 2025-2026 wrestling season has been amazing, and each player has shown dedication, improvement and commitment. The team learned how to work together as a unit and share celebrations with each other. Overall, the season has been a great experience that helped students become better athletes, teammates and people.
We here at Canyon High School see the work the wrestling team is putting in and wish you the best at district.
