On October 25th, the Canyon High School Marching Band participated in the UIL Area D marching band competition. At 3:30 p.m., the band performed their show titled “Beauty In The Broken” and placed 16th out of 27 bands.
Throughout the season, the band created many memorable moments that will stay with them throughout the years. Many band members shared things about this season and about the challenges, friendships and how the band has changed them over the season. Each one went through long after-school rehearsals ,football games and competitions the following day, and no matter what happened always showed dedication and passion.
In the bands show there were many different moments with so much emotion, especially part four of the show. Drum major senior Jordan DeAses said, “In the closer at our last contest [letter AA specifically]} there was a moment where I got emotional, and was proud of the progress this band has made over the past.”
Another band member, freshman Brianna, said, “My favorite part of this season’s show was probably AA. I just liked the way it flowed.”
Other than certain parts of the show being amazing, the whole thing could be seen as one of the best shows as drum major Jordan quoted, “Musically, towards the end of the season, we started to sound better than we have ever sounded throughout the years I have been here, which led us to being on the top half of bands in our UIL area.”
Head drum major senior Sofia Guitan also spoke about the band’s improvement saying, “Even though we didn’t make it far, I enjoyed seeing how much everyone had improved from the beginning of the season to the last few rehearsals.“
Before improvements, there are always challenges that follow. While having fun in a band is an important part of growing friendships and making memories, sometimes it can lead to push backs toward directors and drum majors.
Drum major senior Caden Scales spoke, “The biggest challenge I faced leading the band was being loud. As an introverted person, it was difficult to be the one to speak up, but by pushing myself and having self-confidence, I was able to push that doubt away.”
Drum major Sofia also quoted, “The biggest challenge for me in leading the band was getting people to pay attention and not joke around as much. I handled it by just constantly walking around and reminding them that being quiet was a way for us to do anything right the first time.”
Another challenge the students faced was staying on task and dedicated to keep pushing through. Freshman Ava Alfaro said, “The hardest part of the season was being motivated to keep going.”
Overall this year’s show had a big impact on students and directors as this was one of the best shows performed by Canyon. Canyon band, good job at everything you have done this marching season .We are excited to see what you have for next year!
