Standing Ovation

Aubree Kabenek goes to Theatre All-State
Standing Ovation

The Texas Thespians Society All-State Festival is happening in San Antonio this year from November 10th through the 14th, and one of our very own Canyon Cougars, Aubree Kabenek, was selected to be a part of the All-State cast.

Senior Aubree Kabenek has been in theatre since 6th grade. She said, “The people are really great, and performing has always been something I’ve really loved.” She also mentioned that it is something that she is planning on continuing and has already received callbacks from some colleges.

Aubree auditioned for All-State this year and was one of only 30 people throughout all of South Texas to make the cast. She explained, “I learned [about All-State] from my director Carter Ridge that there were auditions. Then, I submitted a video of me singing and dancing.” Kabenek said, “It’s great. I’ve been on some Zoom rehearsals, and the people are so nice. It’s crazy to work with Broadway people.”

The two Broadway directors participating this year are Berry Busby and Leslie Flesner. Berry Busby is a Broadway choreographer and director. He has worked on multiple well-known Broadway plays such as Legally Blonde, Grease, and Hairspray! Leslie Flesner is a Broadway singer and actress. She is known for her roles in Hello Dolly!, Cinderella, and Funny Girl.

After all the rehearsals are over, Aubree will also get a Q+A with the Broadway directors to learn any tricks or hear any advice. Once everything is ready, they will perform at the State Festival on November 10-14.

Finally, Aubree said, “I think everyone should join theatre. It’s pretty fun and a great opportunity.”

Making All-State Cast is an incredible accomplishment. Canyon High School wishes the best of luck to Aubree! If you see her in the halls or in a Canyon classroom, be sure to say hi and congratulate her on her endeavors as an All-State Cast member.
