On Saturday, February 25, forty of Canyon’s choir and piano students earned superior ratings at UIL Solo & Ensemble Contest. Fourteen singers and three pianists advanced to state. Bela Abrego, Mia Avila, Zach Cochran, Kaitlynn Delos Santos, Sylas Greene, Laurel Hagelgans, Josue Hijar, Jasmine Johnston, Theo Leavitt, Jordyn Martin, Kara Munoz, Skylar Oldbury, Valeria Vazquez,  and Hattie Wuchter advanced to state on their vocal solos. Presley Bolado, Samuel Reyes, and Audrey Wang advanced to state with their piano solos. 

In addition to these seventeen musicians who qualified for state, twenty-three students earned superior ratings on their solos. Brandon Lopez, Kaitlynn Delos Santos, Elisa Flores, Josue Hijar, Amanda Mata, Marc Mora, and Julyssa Sanchez performed on piano. Kinsley Brock-Collins, Natalie Delgado, Emma Dobbs, Abigail Farias-Banda, Alex Fraker, Andrea Fuentes, Makayla Gonzalez, Aniya Johnson, Emily Lingebach, Kaitiey Mead, Michaela Perez, Kaylen Stindt, Parker Toro, Alyssa Williamson, Vincent Hankins, and Nishi Patel earned ratings on voice.

Band director Jay Martin has pointed out that there have been many competitions this year that have been top-notch and outstanding performances. 

Choir director Karla Cruz mentioned, “Our best achievements were during the fall and winter because it’s the holidays and everyone is engaged; plus, we have students that have qualified for state and regionals.”
