SPUD is a highly positive deed and you may be wondering, “What is SPUD?” SPUD stands for Students Performing Unselfish Deeds. Set up by our STUCO (Student Council), the objective is to raise money for a community member in need; this year’s SPUD recipients were two students at Freiheit Elementary whose home was destroyed in a fire.
Canyon High School raised money in many different ways, such as selling items and tickets to events. These events raised a lot of money. During lunches, National Honor Society sold henna tattoos, Student Council hosted Cougar jukebox, and other organizations held events, such as a push up challenge, Canyon’s Got Talent, spirit nights, a tennis game with student versus staff and various other exciting events.
One of our most popular events was the staff versus students basketball game that was held during COOG Time on March 3rd. A lot of people attended, and it helped raise a lot of money.
Behind the scenes, getting this event moving into action can consist of struggles to set it up, whether it be organizing events, getting ideas or even getting students to help.
One of Canyon’s STUCO executive members senior Jazzy Martinez quoted, “I think it was successful enough in the way that we can help them, but I definitely think next year we need more student involvement and more [information] letting them know because I feel like we kind of fell behind on that.”
Junior Jackson Lee participated in the American Sign Language club’s event Signing for Soda. Jackson stated, “I really like this event because it gives me a chance to get a soda, and not only that, but it also contributes to a good cause.”

The Canyon’s Got Talent show, held on February 27, had many attendees. It gave students a chance to perform their talents while also helping raise money for SPUD.
Freshman Dominik Perez, who sang for the show, said, “I was very scared at first to perform, but after I saw all the people who came to support me, it gave me a big confidence boost, and I was able to sing without worrying.”
Sophomore Giada Garza said, “I thought the talent show was really lovely. I really liked how everyone showed up and showed support to the performers. One performer that I really liked was Dominik Perez, and I liked how the crowd shone their lights for his performance.”
Canyon’s Got Talent was amazing this year, and we hope that we can keep this tradition going in the future because it holds amazing memories and talents.
Thank you from Cougar Tracks to everyone who helped contribute to benefit a family in need. We loved to see all the amazing acts of kindness here at Canyon High School and send a big shoutout to Canyon High School Student Council and everyone who helped.
